Napoleon Dynamite
Napoleon Dynamite was a shelter dog. Unfortunately he was one of the shelter dogs that did not find a new home. He was put to sleep. I’m not writing this to make people cry, so please don’t start sobbing…Unfortunately there are many people that get a dog or a cat and don’t consider the fact that it will live on average 20 years…that in 20 years moving might occur, financial problems, health problems…and so on…. People don’t realize that dogs aren’t toys, they need time devoted to them, consistent training, socialization, love and care. And even if a dog is brought up with a lot of devotion it could still have behavior problems or health problems. The causes of these problems can be many.
A responsible person would be conscious of this and when buying a dog/cat the person would be agreeing to care for the pet NO MATTER WHAT.
If a person can’t do so…get a toy that barks and wags instead…or find a hobby!
For people that would love to care for a pet but has an unsteady life that might not allow them to hold on to one for 20 yrs….try fostering or volunteering at a shelter!
Petsitting, and dog walking is another option.
I never knew how many pets get abandoned throughout a year until I went to volunteer at a shelter. I washed dishes for several hours, and after that I put disposable litter boxes together, as last I made sure all dogs had water and took some of them for a walk to breath some fresh air.
Coming from another country, I didn’t even know that dogs were being put to sleep there.
When I found out about it, I felt like I needed to do something to help out.
I started taking pictures of some dogs and some cats every time I went there. As soon as I would get home I dedicated several hrs placing ads online with those pictures and a personalized story for each of them. Dynamite was one of those dogs that I took pictures of, and he also was a dog that struck me as something special…he had something in him that just made me love him instantly and want to find a home for him as quickly as possible. He was there 9 days… I found a home for him on the 9th day, but unfortunately I was just some hours too late.
So many pets there that were abandoned because of irresponsible owners…I can’t help them all by myself, nobody can help all by themselves, not even the shelter or all the animal rescues that exist.
Some people tell me they don’t go there because it makes them cry. All I can say is if you actually did go there, you would give them a better time for that moment. Not going because it makes you cry…leaves them one more hour without love and care.
For those who don’t have time…..even 1 hour in 6 months could give some exercise/joy to the pets for a short moment.
Dynamite to me was that hammer smashed into my heart, it showed me reality and it made me realize what I do is not enough…it might never be enough…but at least I can keep on trying…and the more people that can get involved, the more people become responsible….the less abandoned there will be.
Dynamite will be in my heart forever, he is my inspiration and the energy that keeps me busy every day.
I hope that with help and involvement from the whole community Dynamite will be able to make a difference to more than just me.
