Group class or Private lessons?

A lot of people go to group class hoping to solve problems they are currently having with their dogs. They go through a 6 week course and end up having their dogs only know how to sit....how come?

First of all it is important to know that when you go through a group class it is VERY important to use everything you learn in every day situations. It is important to remain consistent in training and to use what you learned all the time, in random places and moments, with or without distractions.
There is absolutely no point in going to any kind of class, if you are not going to maintain what you have learned afterwards.

What kind of problems are you having?
Common problems such as, chewing, nipping, pulling on the leash, unruly behavior in the house, jumping, and house training are often covered in Group classes in a quick manner.

Problems such as aggression, lunging leash behavior, and separation anxiety often needs some extra attention besides only a group class.

What do you learn?

Obedience classes (group classes) takes you through basic obedience cues and teach you how to apply them in every day life situations and how you can use them to solve some problems.
Great choice if you have no clue on how to work with your dog, great for puppies so you can start off in the right manner, and great for teaching your dog to obey regardless all the distractions. Of course, it is great to create a bond.

Private lessons are specifically created depending on your needs.
The trainer comes to your house and discusses with you about your problems. Trainer observes your dog to understand what can be causing the problem and then guides you through the solutions.

Sometimes it is convenient to go through a group class before going through private lessons, because obedience cues can be useful to solve problems.
However, if you have problems of aggression/lunging, shyness/fear or extreme separation anxiety it is best to start with private lessons.
